Changes of opinion.

A critic is a man who knows the way but can't drive the car ~ Kenneth Tynan~

How times change, I have been reading about Impressionist and post Impressionist painters.

I read that 100 years ago 5th November 1910, a major exhibition in London showing works by Cézanne, Gauguin, Van Gogh, shocked British art critics.

According to the art historian Rachel Teukolsky, “the paintings’ styles looked so unlike the realist canvases to which the British public was accustomed, that some reviewers accused the artists of attempting literally to destroy the Western visual canon.” A number of critics associated the paintings with French revolutionary political traditions. “In France a reform movement always has its section who are for the barricades, the guillotine, and the Anarchist’s bomb,” a review for the Spectator.

Fortunately times and opinions change about art, although we still see plenty of barricades!

The image for this post is a recent photograph taken in the forest, I almost discarded it, yet it seems to be going down fairly well on Flickr I named it ...

The Vision

The French word for critic is critique

To be open to citicism is ~ ouvert à la criticism

I recall a lecturer at college who always referred to the impressionists as 'chocolate box artists' which I thought narrow minded and foolish...we forget how groundbreaking they truly were...lovely photo, can't believe you weren't going to post it...

Our eyes are the only response that matters-and they're attached to our brain! :)

How odd.

My favourite paintings are impressionist. If I want realism, I will use a camera.
