Mon pote & My post

~~ Slang is a language that rolls up its sleeves, spits on its hands and goes to work.~~
~~ Carl Sandburg, New York Times, 13 February 1959 ~~

~~Thursday evening I went to see a friend for aperos and a chat. Another couple were there and we talked about speaking and learning French. I have a love of words and my friend explained that the first part of the English word Parliament means to talk, Parler . I wonder how many MPs know this?

These days we seem to chat with friends on the internet via Facebook, can you imagine the shock if a friend wrote a letter to you? My post box only receives bills, and occasional junk mail, and maybe a couple of postcards per year!

Here is a post box I spotted in Fougeres on Wednesday.

Pas de Pub!

Some French words

The French for a post is a poteau.

Poteau or Pote for short, in French slang means friend, ami fidele.

If you know why Poteau / Pote became a word for ami please can you let me know!
